You don't need technical gear for Pacaya. You need shoes that grip on loose sand, a layer for the top, something for the rain and cash in quetzales. Get those right and the rest is comfort.
The list below follows what the operators ask for on their listings, plus what the trail itself teaches people the hard way.
The quick answer
Wear hiking boots or sturdy trainers with good grip, long trousers and a light jacket for the windy lava field. From May to October add a raincoat or poncho, and on 14:00 tours a torch for the walk down. Carry 1 to 2 litres of water, snacks, sun protection and quetzales in cash: Q100 for the park fee plus Q10 for a stick and more for a horse.

What should you wear to hike Pacaya?
Shoes with grip, long trousers, a T-shirt with a light jacket over it, and a hat. Add rain gear in the wet season.
The Antigua listing asks for hiking boots with good traction and toe protection, comfortable trousers, a light jacket and sun protection. Long trousers beat shorts here: lava rock scrapes and the sand is dusty. Leggings or light hiking trousers are ideal.
Dress in layers. You will sweat on the climb and cool down fast once you stop on the open lava field.
Pack the boots, then lock in the seat: the shared hike from Antigua, 06:00 or 14:00.

Hiking boots or sturdy trainers with a deep tread. No sandals: lava rock is sharp and the sand gets everywhere.
Toe protection matters on the lava field, where you scramble over rough rock. Grip matters on the descent, which is loose sand on a slope. Living in Guatemala says hiking boots or sturdy sneakers. The half-day listing asks for closed-toe shoes, and the ATV operator recommends closed shoes over sandals.
Ankle boots keep the grit out better than low trainers. Wear socks you don't love; the black sand stains. In the rainy season, waterproof boots are worth it.

How cold is it at the top of Pacaya?
Cooler and windier than Antigua, not freezing on a normal day hike. A light jacket or fleece is enough; bring a warmer layer on the afternoon tour.
The lava field sits high and exposed on a mountain that tops out at 2,552 m. Wind and cloud cool it fast, and you stand still for about 30 minutes there. Antigua tours ask for a light jacket in the dry season. If you are on the 14:00 tour, the temperature drops as the sun goes down.
The warm steam vents don't count as heating. You stand next to them for a marshmallow, not for half an hour.
What should you wear in the rainy season?
A raincoat or poncho and waterproof boots from May to October. Rain usually comes in the afternoon, so the 06:00 tour stays drier.
Guatemala's rainy season runs from May to October, and the Antigua listing recommends morning tours for exactly this reason. Bring a proper rain jacket rather than counting on the plastic ponchos sold on the trail; Bucketlistly calls a light rain jacket important. Wet sand is heavy, and wet clothes on a windy lava field are cold.
A dry bag or zip bag for your phone and cash costs nothing to pack. Planning the season? See the 2026-27 dry season post.

Go at 06:00 in the rainy season: the morning departure is the drier one, and the views are clearer.

On the 14:00 tour, yes. You come down around dusk, and the listing asks afternoon hikers to bring a flashlight in the rainy season.
A headlamp is best: it leaves both hands free for the stick and for balance on the sand. Your phone torch works in a pinch but eats the battery you want for sunset photos. On the 06:00 tour you can leave it at home.

How much cash should you bring for Pacaya?
At least Q100 per adult for the park fee, plus Q10 for a stick, Q150 to Q300 for a horse and extra for snacks, marshmallows and a tip. In quetzales only.
The gate takes no cards, dollars or euros. Neither do the handlers and vendors on the trail. A simple budget per person:

| Horse (optional) | Q150 one way, about Q300 round trip |

Explore the shared hike from Guatemala City Tour detailsHow much water and food should you bring?
1 to 2 litres of water and a snack per person. The cheapest tours supply nothing; vendors on the trail sell drinks and snacks for cash.
The half-day listing tells you to bring drinks and snacks. The Guatemala City day trip includes bottled water. The lunch tour feeds you on the lava field, and the ATV tour includes water, Gatorade and a sandwich. Living in Guatemala suggests 2 litres for the climb, which feels right on a sunny morning.
Eat breakfast before a 06:00 pickup, even a small one. There are toilets at the park entrance only, none on the trail.

What else should you pack for Pacaya?
Sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and a small day pack. Leave the big camera bag and the white trainers at the hotel.
- Sun protection: the lava field has no shade, and the sun is strong at altitude.
- A day pack with both hands free for the stick and the rocks.
- A buff or scarf for dust on dry days and wind at the top.
- ID if you are Guatemalan: the Q30 rate needs a DPI or passport.
- A spare layer of socks, especially for kids.
Going on to Acatenango? That needs much more: winter clothes for a night below freezing. See Pacaya or Acatenango.
Bring water and Q100, the van does the rest: the $20 half-day hike from Antigua.
