The shared hike from Antigua

A shared shuttle collects you in Antigua, and a local guide walks your group up through pine forest to the black lava fields below Pacaya's steaming cone. It's the classic way to do the volcano, with a morning or an afternoon slot and the most reviews of any Pacaya tour.

Pacaya Volcano Hike from Antigua

About this experience

Voyageur Tours runs this one twice a day from Antigua, at 06:00 and 14:00. The listing breaks the day down plainly: about three hours of driving in total, then 1.5 hours up, 30 minutes on top and about 50 minutes down. Half the day is the van. That's normal for Pacaya, and the road to San Francisco de Sales is slow.

The walk starts in pine forest on a sandy trail and comes out onto open slopes of cooled lava, with the active MacKenney cone smoking above you. On clear days you look across to Agua, Fuego and Acatenango. The guide finds warm cracks in the rock where you roast marshmallows. You don't climb the cone, and the listing says it straight: no flowing lava is visible.

The $35 is transport and guide. The Q100 park fee (about $14) is paid at the entrance in quetzales cash, and a horse costs about Q300 if your legs give up. If you want pizza baked on the lava, Voyageur can put you in touch with Pizza Pacaya, but you order and pay David directly. For a quieter morning with everything paid, look at the morning hike with lunch.

  • Two departures a day from Antigua: 06:00 or 14:00

How the day runs

  1. 06:00 or 14:00Pickup in Antigua

The shuttle collects you at selected hotels. On the afternoon tour you may be asked to walk to a central point instead, to dodge the traffic.

  2. About 1.5 hDrive to the trailhead

Out of the valley and south to the park entrance. Pay the Q100 fee in cash here and use the toilets: there are none higher up.

  3. About 1.5 hClimb to the lava field

A steady sandy trail through forest, then open slopes. Horse handlers follow the group in case anyone wants a ride.

  4. About 30 minOn the lava

Steam vents, warm rock and marshmallows below the cone, with the other volcanoes on the horizon if the cloud lifts.

  5. About 50 min, then 1.5 hDown and back to Antigua

The descent is quicker but loose underfoot. Back in town about six hours after pickup.

What guests say

★★★★★

This was an amazing hike! Very intense in the beginning since it's a steep climb, but the views (and the marshmallows) are worth it! Our guide Ervin was great, very knowledgeable and funny too. PSA: The road to the volcano is pretty winding, so if you get motion sickness easily I'd recommend using a scopolamine patch or taking some Dramamine before.

It was a fun experience riding the horses to the volcano. The horses were sure footed and knew the trail well. The pace was nice and slow. We had plenty of time to walk around and see the recent lava flows and the areas where steam was coming from the volcanic ground. The Lava Store at the top was very interesting.

The hike and the view at the end are incredible and if you keep that in mind, it's worth it. I found it really exhausting and I'm happy that I did it! [...] We had a nice driver and a nice guide. The marshmallows sweetened it up too :) totally recommended!

Tips before you book

  • Bring Q100 in cash per person. No cards, dollars or euros at the gate, and the ATMs are back in Antigua.
  • From May to October book the 06:00 slot. Rain usually comes in the afternoon, and the trail turns to mud.
  • On the 14:00 tour bring a headlamp. You walk down in the dusk.
  • Wear boots or trail shoes with grip. The lava is sharp and the volcanic sand slides.
  • Want pizza on the lava? Ask Voyageur when you book; David of Pizza Pacaya takes orders and payment himself.

Frequently asked questions

Is the park fee included in the $35?

No. The Q100 entrance fee (about $14) is paid in quetzales cash at the park gate. Our guide to Pacaya prices shows which tours include it.

Morning or afternoon: which Pacaya tour is better?

In the rainy season (May to October) take the 06:00 tour: the listing itself recommends it because rain is more likely later. From November to April the 14:00 tour gives you the softer light near sunset, but you come down in the dark, so carry a light.

Will I see lava?

Not flowing lava. The listing says so, and Pacaya's last lava flows stopped in May 2021. You see steam, smell sulphur and feel heat coming out of the rock. See can you see lava at Pacaya.

How hard is the hike?

Moderate. About 1.5 hours uphill on sand and loose rock, about 5 km in total. Children from 4 can go with an adult, and horses wait at the trailhead for anyone who would rather ride.
