Acatenango overnight

Two days on Acatenango, Guatemala's third-highest volcano, sleeping in a cabin that faces Fuego, which throws lava into the night sky when it's active. Meals, a sleeping bag and a winter jacket are included, and the climb is much harder than Pacaya.

Acatenango Overnight Hike to Watch Fuego

About this experience

Start with the catch: this booking is non-refundable. The listing says all sales are final, with no refund for cancellations, so only book when your dates are firm. Every Pacaya tour on this site gives free cancellation up to 24 hours before. This one doesn't.

Acatenango rises to about 3,976 m. You climb about 1,500 metres on loose volcanic sand to a camp facing Fuego, its active twin. The camp is run with CAT, a cooperative of local guides from San José Calderas. Cabins sleep four, with a mattress, pillow, a sleeping bag rated to -6°C, a liner and an extra blanket. Lunch, dinner and breakfast are included, plus a 3-litre Camelbak with water, a winter jacket, gloves, a raincoat, a buff and a flashlight.

The extra night hike towards Fuego costs Q200, paid on the mountain. Transport isn't listed on the shared option (the private option adds it), so ask how you reach the trailhead. And don't think of this as Pacaya with a sleepover: the listing asks for a high level of fitness, and it means it. Our Pacaya vs Acatenango guide helps you choose.

What guests say

★★★★★

Marvin & the entire group of guides were amazing. I had such a wonderful time, the view and the experience is just insane. The accommodation is good too, I was very scared of getting too cold at night but the sleeping bag is very warm.

This trip was certainly a highlight of the time in Guatemala. The guides are friendly and well equipped to take care of the group. The optional hike to Fuego and the sunrise summit hike are well worth it! The .pdf that is provided upon confirmation has all the information one could need to prepare for this hike.

Amazing experience, excellent service starting from the initial meeting point, to our great driver and our even better guide Rogelio. Good food (Lunch, dinner, breakfast). Our guide took us on this amazing journey to the top at a steady pace and stopping whenever we needed to. 10 out of 10

Tips before you book

  • Only book once your dates are fixed. There are no refunds.
  • Layer up for the night. Camp is cold even with the jacket, and the summit is colder.
  • Bring Q200 in cash if you think you'll want the Fuego hike.
  • Train on hills for a couple of weeks if you can. The sand makes every step harder.
